What caught me off guard was not the nudity itself, but an unexpected request from two guests. Before their treatment, one guest pulled out her cellphone and asked me to take photographs of her and her friend as they posed seductively in front of a luxurious, custom made Balinese wall. It was certainly not something I had anticipated as part of my workday.
I had not fully understood the implications of a clothing optional environment when I first started working there. My awareness came after an incident involving a frustrated mother who was informed that her 13 year old daughter could not enter the facility. Initially, I did not understand the restriction because I regularly provide massage therapy to clients of different ages. I later learned that the spa's clothing optional policy, combined with its service of alcoholic beverages, creates an environment with different expectations and limitations than those of a traditional day spa.
Because the spa is part of a resort hotel, guests may arrive with different expectations about the experience, atmosphere, and amenities. Some may anticipate a conventional spa visit, while others are comfortable with the clothing optional setting. Although nudity is permitted, most guests choose to remain in their robes. That has been my experience during my time there, which is why seeing three nude guests in a single day caught me by surprise.
Working in massage therapy means adapting to different environments, understanding professional boundaries, and respecting each establishment's policies. A clothing optional spa within a resort hotel operates differently from a conventional day spa, and learning those distinctions is part of understanding the setting in which we work. Even after years in the massage therapy profession, there are still moments that remind me how much variety exists within the industry.
